What is ETIAS?

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a mandatory pre-travel requirement for nationals of visa-exempt countries — including Australia — who wish to visit any of the 30 Schengen Area member states.

ETIAS is not a visa. It is an automated electronic check linked to your passport that must be approved before you board any flight, train, or ferry to Europe. Approved ETIAS holders can visit all Schengen countries under a single authorisation.

Border authorities retain the right to refuse entry on arrival even with an approved ETIAS, but holding a valid authorisation is a strict requirement before travel.

Do Australians need an ETIAS?

Yes. Australian citizens travelling to any Schengen Area country — including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands — are required to hold a valid ETIAS before departure. This applies to tourism, business visits, and transit through Schengen airports.

An ETIAS is not required if you already hold a valid Schengen visa. Australians who have previously been refused a Schengen visa may not be eligible for ETIAS and will need to apply for a visa instead.

Not sure if you qualify? Visit ETA Permits and click Your Journey Begins Here — you can check your eligibility instantly on the application page.

Good to know: A single ETIAS covers all 30 Schengen Area countries. If your European trip takes you through multiple countries — say France, Italy, and Spain — you only need one ETIAS application.

Frequently asked questions

Do Australian citizens need an ETIAS for every European country?
No — a single ETIAS covers all 30 Schengen Area member states. However, not every European country is in the Schengen Area. If you plan to visit non-Schengen countries such as the United Kingdom or Ireland, you may need separate travel authorisations for those destinations.
How long is an ETIAS valid for Australian passport holders?
An approved ETIAS is valid for three years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. Within that period you may make multiple trips to the Schengen Area, each for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Do I need an ETIAS to transit through a European airport?
In most cases yes — even if you are connecting through a Schengen airport and not leaving the international zone, a valid ETIAS is generally required. Check the full requirements at ETA Permits for your specific itinerary.
Can I work in Europe on an ETIAS?
No. The ETIAS is for tourism, short business visits, and transit only. It does not permit employment or study in the Schengen Area. If you intend to work or study, you will need to apply for the appropriate national visa.
Do Australian children need their own ETIAS?
Yes. Every traveller — including infants and children — requires their own individual ETIAS linked to their own passport. ETA Permits makes it straightforward to apply for all family members at once.
What if my ETIAS is refused?
If your ETIAS application is refused you will need to apply for a Schengen visa through the embassy or consulate of your destination country. ETA Permits reviews every application before submission to reduce the risk of rejection.
